Faculty Additional Compensation

Faculty Additional Compensation

Faculty members should consult with the Office of Academic Affairs before accepting any assignment for which additional compensation may be requested. University policies governing additional compensation are described in the Faculty Handbook chapter on Compensation.

Additional compensation refers to compensation paid for approved activities that fall outside the scope of a faculty member's regular appointment and responsibilities. Eligibility for additional compensation is determined in accordance with University policy and is subject to all required School and University approvals.

All requests for additional compensation involving SIPA faculty members must be reviewed by the Office of Academic Affairs. This requirement applies to requests originating within SIPA as well as requests from other Columbia University schools, departments, centers, institutes, and administrative units. No commitment regarding additional compensation should be made until all required approvals have been obtained.

Additional Compensation for Full-Time Faculty

During the academic year, faculty may earn up to 20% of their monthly base salary in additional compensation and may not earn more than 20% of their monthly base salary in any given month.

During the summer, faculty may earn up to 3/9ths of their academic-year base salary in additional compensation, which may be distributed as 1/9th in June, 1/9th in July, and 1/9th in August.

Additional compensation must be paid during the semester in which it is undertaken. Payments for work conducted in one semester cannot be distributed across a subsequent semester.

Payments made under the University's Housing Assistance Program, as well as payments for teaching in Executive Education and other non-degree, non-credit programs (irrespective of modality), are excluded from these limits.

Additional Compensation for Part-Time Faculty

Additional compensation must be paid during the semester in which it is undertaken.

Additional compensation may not equal or exceed 50% of an adjunct faculty member's total appointment salary or 50% of their monthly compensation.

Adjunct faculty may receive additional compensation only if they hold an active adjunct faculty appointment during the semester in which the work is performed. Individuals who are not otherwise appointed to teach during that semester are not eligible for additional compensation.

Compensation for teaching credit-bearing courses should be incorporated into the adjunct faculty member's appointment salary and is not normally paid as additional compensation.

Payments for teaching in Executive Education and other non-degree, non-credit programs (irrespective of modality) are excluded from these limits.

For additional information, please consult the Columbia University Faculty Handbook or contact the Office of Academic Affairs.

Requests and Approvals

Requests for additional compensation should be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs sufficiently in advance of the proposed activity to allow for review and approval.

Schools, departments, centers, institutes, and administrative units seeking to provide additional compensation to a SIPA faculty member must coordinate with the Office of Academic Affairs before making commitments regarding instructional assignments, administrative responsibilities, research activities, consulting arrangements, executive education activities, or other compensated services.

For additional information, please consult the Columbia University Faculty Handbook or contact the Office of Academic Affairs.
