Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) and Institutional Review Board (IRB)
Columbia University’s Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is overseen by the Executive Vice President for Research and the Institutional Review Board (IRB). The program is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that all human research studies conducted by Columbia faculty, employees, and students are conducted ethically and in a manner that promotes the protection of participants in research. In accordance with institutional policy, all such research must not only be in compliance with state and federal regulations, but must also meet or exceed the standards of accreditation as set forth by the Association for Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP).
Human research studies that collect personal information or require interaction with vulnerable populations must receive approval from the IRB before commencement. IRB review is very thorough and typically requires at least six weeks. Again, the review must be fully completed before human subjects research can begin.
For more information see Columbia University’s IRB Standard Operating Procedures.
