SIPA Announces New Faculty for 2026–27

Columbia SIPA is pleased to announce a new cohort of faculty, some joining the School for the first time while others are familiar faces on campus. The incoming group brings together scholars whose research is advancing their fields and practitioners who have shaped policy at the highest levels of government and international institutions — from leading scholars in comparative politics, economics, and science policy to a UN General Assembly president — reflecting the continued growth of SIPA's curriculum across global leadership, economic policy, security studies, and science policy.

“Each year, our school continues to grow as a global center of gravity for excellent, path-breaking, and policy-relevant research and teaching, and this year’s incoming faculty members and fellows exemplify that ambition,” said Columbia SIPA Dean Keren Yarhi-Milo. “They bring extraordinary accomplishments across academia, government, and international institutions, combining intellectual excellence with decades of experience at the highest levels of policymaking. I am delighted to welcome them to our community and excited for our students to learn from and engage with them.”

Below are the faculty joining, visiting, or taking on new roles at SIPA for the 2026–27 academic year.
 

New Faculty:

Annalena Baerbock 
Annalena Baerbock joins us this fall as professor of professional practice and the faculty codirector of the MPA in Global Leadership. Baerbock has most recently served as the president of the 80th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations. She previously was the federal minister of foreign affairs of Germany, having also been a member of the German Bundestag and coleader of the Alliance 90/The Greens political party. Baerbock, who earned her law degree at the London School of Economics, will teach three new courses in her field of expertise. 

Stacie Goddard
Stacie Goddard has been named director of the Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies and holds the Arnold A. Saltzman Professorship. Goddard, who earned her PhD in political science at Columbia University, most recently served as the Betty Freyhof Johnson ’44 Professor of Political Science and associate provost for Wellesley in the World at Wellesley College, where she has taught since 2005. Her research and teaching focus on great power competition, with particular attention to the global politics of legitimacy and revisionist powers. Read the announcement.

Jiyoon Kim 
Jiyoon Kim joins SIPA as the Wm. Theodore de Bary ’41 Lecturer in Discipline. A specialist in the psychology of international relations and political methodology, Kim earned her PhD at the Ohio State University and will teach two new courses at SIPA as well as Contemporary Civilization in Columbia College’s Core Curriculum.

Joseph Lasky 
Joseph Lasky joins SIPA as the Robert E. Pollack ’61 Lecturer in Discipline. He is an expert in African politics and political violence. Lasky, who earned his PhD at Cornell University, will teach two new courses at SIPA as well as Contemporary Civilization in Columbia College’s Core Curriculum.

Gideon Rose 
Gideon Rose joins SIPA as a senior lecturer in discipline. Rose earned his PhD in government at Harvard University and joined the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) after serving on the White House National Security Council as the associate director for Near East and South Asian Affairs. Rose served as the managing editor and then editor of Foreign Affairs, CFR’s renowned journal. A leader in conceptualizing foreign policy for elected officials, policymakers, and academics, he will teach the required course Contemporary Debates in Global Affairs and Public Policy for the new undergraduate major, as well as courses on the Iran war and the liberal international order. 
 

Visiting Faculty:

Daniela Campello 
Daniela Campello visits SIPA from the Brazilian university Fundação Getulio Vargas. Campello earned her PhD at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has published widely on climate policy, globalization, and democracy. She will teach three courses related to the social, political, and economic development of the Global South.

Salam Fayyad
Salam Fayyad is visiting SIPA to teach a course in the spring semester and continue as an IGP Carnegie Distinguished Fellow. Fayyad earned his PhD in economics at the University of Texas at Austin and joined the International Monetary Fund in 1987, later serving as the IMF’s representative for the West Bank and Gaza and then as CEO of the Arab Bank. He has held multiple leadership roles in Palestine, including minister of finance for the Palestinian Authority, minister of finance for the National Unity Government, prime minister of the National Unity Government, and prime minister of the State of Palestine. 

Karnit Flug 
Karnit Flug is visiting from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where she is a professor of economics. She earned her PhD at Columbia University before joining the International Monetary Fund in 1984. An expert in central banking, Flug has served at the Bank of Israel since 1988 and was the governor of the bank from 2013–18. Flug’s academic publications are wide-ranging, covering central banking and global financial crises; labor, poverty, and employment; and education and unemployment. She will teach a course on the Israeli economy during the fall semester.
 

Faculty Taking on New Roles:

Lincoln Mitchell
Lincoln Mitchell, who has longstanding experience teaching at Columbia University in various capacities, will continue at SIPA as a full-time lecturer in discipline. He brings wide-ranging research and teaching interests spanning US foreign policy, international politics and development, and urban politics. Mitchell will teach both American Politics and International Politics for SIPA’s new MIA and MPA core curriculum. In addition, he will lead instructional support for Inside the Situation Room, a course cotaught by Secretary Hillary Clinton and Dean Yarhi-Milo. He earned his PhD in political science at Columbia University.

Natalia Pasternak 
Natalia Pasternak will lead a new minor in Science Policy and Communication as a lecturer in discipline, which will include courses such as Science for Policymaking; Communicating for Science Policy; Bad Science, Bad Policy; and Evidence and Expertise in Science Policy. Stuart Firestein, professor of biological sciences, joins Natalia in this effort and will also teach in the minor. A microbiologist, Pasternak earned her PhD from the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Her research, teaching, and advocacy focus on improving science communication and vaccine uptake, combating denialism and misinformation, and building scientific thinking among future policymakers. 

Yumi Shimabukuro
Yumi Shimabukuro, winner of Columbia's prestigious Presidential Teaching Award in 2025, has taken on the role of faculty codirector of the MPA in Global Leadership this year, alongside Annalena Baerbock.

Shiv Someshwar 
Shiv Someshwar will serve as interim faculty director of the MPA in Development Practice this fall, while we finalize the appointment of a new faculty director — a distinguished scholar-practitioner with extensive experience in international development — who will join the program in January. We look forward to sharing more soon.
