Daniela Campello

Daniela Campello is a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. Her research lies at the intersection of international and comparative political economy and Latin American politics, with a particular focus on how globalization and external economic forces shape domestic politics, policy choices, and democratic accountability in emerging economies. Her current research examines the political economy of development and climate transition, China–Latin America relations, environmental politics, and democratic resilience and erosion.

Campello is the author of The Politics of Market Discipline in Latin America: Globalization and Democracy (Cambridge University Press, 2015) and co-author, with Cesar Zucco, of The Volatility Curse: Exogenous Shocks and Representation in Resource-Rich Democracies (Cambridge University Press, 2020). Her research has appeared in leading journals including The Journal of Politics, Review of International Political Economy, Comparative Political Studies, and Environmental Politics. Her current book project, Obstructing the Future: The Politics of Climate Policy in Brazil, examines the political and economic forces that shape climate policy in a major emerging and forest economy.

Alongside her academic work, Campello has extensive experience engaging with governments, international organizations, policy institutions, investors, and private- sector audiences. She has provided analysis on Brazilian politics and political risk to the U.S. Department of State, briefed institutional investors and financial-market audiences on Brazilian political and macroeconomic developments, and contributed to international strategic foresight and policy initiatives on Latin America, global economic governance, and democratic resilience. She is a Research Associate at the Laboratório de Estudos Geopolíticos da Amazônia Legal (LEGAL), a member of the Working Group on Global (Dis)Order, a joint initiative of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the British Academy, and a member of the Working Group on Global Challenges to Democracy at the Toda Peace Institute.

Prior to her current appointment, Campello was the Edward Larocque Tinker Visiting Professor at Columbia’s Institute of Latin American Studies. She previously served as an Associate Professor of Politics at the Getulio Vargas Foundation and as an Assistant Professor in Princeton University’s Department of Politics and Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. She has also held research fellowships at the Wilson Center and at the University of Oxford.

Before entering academia, Campello worked as an international funding manager in the Rio de Janeiro state government, as a sell-side financial analyst at UBS Pactual, and as a business analyst at Accenture. She received her PhD in Political Science from UCLA.
