Resilient Ridgewood - Spring

The Village of Ridgewood faces increasing risks from flash flooding and extreme heat, necessitating a comprehensive sustainability roadmap. The research utilized flood risk models and the EPA’s Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) to evaluate nature-based solutions for stormwater retention. Scientific findings show that increasing the permeability of the urban landscape is critical; the report specifically advocates for replacing artificial turf with natural grass and bordering wetlands to slow runoff. Technical analysis of "subsurface basins" and "nonlinear weirs" indicates that these engineering solutions can significantly mitigate the impacts of heavy rainfall events that currently overwhelm the municipal sewer system. Beyond water management, the team explored strategies for reducing the "utility burden" on residents through energy efficiency. Research results suggest that a village-wide campaign for "walk to school" programs and an ordinance on electric leaf blowers can provide immediate reductions in both noise pollution and localized emissions. The project also evaluated the cost-benefit of private rain barrels and permeable pavement for residential properties. Findings emphasize that community engagement is the linchpin of success; without "bottom-up" participation, even the most scientifically sound infrastructure projects will face public opposition. The research concludes with a prioritized implementation timeline, recommending that Ridgewood focus on high-visibility pilot projects—such as bioswales in public parks—to demonstrate the efficacy of resilient design. This roadmap provides a strategic framework for the Village to secure grant funding and build long-term climate resilience while preserving the character of the community.
