Navigating ESG Regulatory Changes: Impacts and Opportunities
This Capstone project, Navigating ESG Regulatory Changes: Impacts and Opportunities, was developed in partnership with Paramount’s Sustainability Unit to help the company respond to a rapidly changing sustainability regulatory landscape. As ESG reporting requirements proliferate across major markets, Paramount may face growing compliance, reputational, financial, and operational risks. In this context, the team designed a standardized, tailored decision-support framework to help identify, compare, and prioritize evolving ESG regulatory requirements, enabling more consistent tracking and informed decision-making.
The team combined a regulatory landscape scan, regulatory matrix, four-dimensional risk-scoring framework, heatmap visualization, compliance and gap assessment, and scenario analysis into an executive-ready and reusable tool. Findings showed that the European Union has adopted regulations that the team framework considered high risk, while the United States sustainability standard is highly localized. The analysis also highlighted Scope 3 GHG emissions, supply-chain due diligence, and anti-greenwashing requirements that may become the heaviest operational burden and suggested that sustainability compliance may increasingly become a central financial and governance risk.
The report produced four core deliverables: a regulatory matrix, a risk dashboard with heatmap and user guide, a compliance and gap assessment, and a scenario analysis. More broadly, it reflected SIPA’s emphasis on applied, interdisciplinary problem-solving that allowed the team to translate policy analysis, regulatory research, and strategic communication into a practical tool with direct organizational value for Paramount.
