Proving the Case for Reconversion of Coal Plants in the United States

Spring 2024

This project aims to analyze the reconversion of coal plants in the United States – to support the view that such transformations, when done in the right way, can generate more jobs, more tax revenues, competitive electricity prices, and more value for electric utilities and other stakeholders - on top of the environmental benefits. The project will have two complementary streams (Micro / Macro):

(1) Analysis of one coal plant site and its potential reconversion options (from repowering to gas, to solar, industrial, or other types of redevelopments) with a quantitative assessment of the associated benefits for the different types of stakeholders.

(2) Mapping of all coal plants in the US and a high-level (qualitative) analysis of which redevelopment options seem the most promising.
