NEW YORK, October 15 – Columbia SIPA is excited to announce that SIPA Professor Sandra E. Black was elected as a Fellow to the Econometric Society. Professor Black is one of 42 Fellows announced this year and joins a distinguished list of just 1,229 Economic Society Fellows elected since 1931.

The Econometric Society is an international organization that works for the advancement of econometrics in its relation to statistics and mathematics through the society’s main activities: the publication of the journals Econometrica, Quantitative Economics, and Theoretical Economics; the publication of a research Monograph Series; the annual organization of scientific meetings in six regions of the world; and the convening of a World Congress once every five years.

“Election as a Fellow of the Econometric Society is a recognition of important contributions to economics. The Fellows represent the highest authority of the Society,” said Eliana La Ferrara, president of the Econometric Society. Since the Society began electing fellows, 84 Econometric Society Fellows have won the Nobel Prize in Economics.

Black is a world-renowned economist who joined SIPA as a professor of economics and international and public affairs in 2019. She has worked at the Federal Reserve Banks of New York and San Francisco and has served as a member of President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers. She is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), a research affiliate at IZA, and serves on the Faculty Advisory Board of SIPA’s Institute of Global Politics.

She has published numerous papers in leading academic journals in the fields of labor economics, education economics, intergenerational mobility, and discrimination, including pieces focusing on the role of nature versus nurture in wealth and other economic outcomes and behaviors and the effect of birth-order on non-cognitive skills.

“It is a tremendous honor to be elected as a Fellow to the Econometric Society, and it's great to see my work recognized,” said Black.
