Using Video and Technology to Open the Eyes of the World to Human Rights Abuse: The Cameras Everywhere Leadership Initiative

Client

Semester

Spring 2012

The WITNESS Capstone team was tasked with formulating effective advocacy strategies for WITNESS to engage with leading technology and social networking companies concerning video, human rights, and privacy.

Social media, mobile phones, and increased access to digital technology have allowed a greater number of people to capture, view, and share videos documenting human rights abuses. WITNESS released the Cameras Everywhere Leadership Initiative in 2011. Aimed at technology companies, human rights organizations, and policy makers, Cameras Everywhere zeroes in on the questions surrounding the intersection of human rights advocacy, media, and technology. How should video content coming in from new sources be verified by human rights organizations? How can social networking sites like Google and Facebook help to protect the privacy of human rights activists? How are policy makers engaging with visual privacy legislation?
