Spring 2024

Brazil will be hosting the G20 meeting of 2024, and the city of Rio de Janeiro will host the Heads of State and Government Summit, as well as a number of internationally significant side events. To oversee preparations and to best position the city to make the most of this opportunity, Mayor Eduardo Paes has recently created the Rio G20 Committee, directly tied to his office. The committee will be responsible not only for all operational and logistical matters, but also for the production of content that mobilizes civil society and advances the city's strategic interests. As part of this content strategy, this Capstone will focus on the role of cities in the G20 process over the years, taking a historical approach as well as a prescriptive one, to document and make recommendations on how global cities have shaped and been shaped by one of the main global governance forums they participate in. Furthermore, within this broader role of cities, it will focus on the evolution of urban climate policy in the G20.
