In collaboration with PepsiCo’s Global Public Policy team, a Capstone team from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs explored strategic approaches to expand access to Affordable Fortified Nutrition (AFN) products in India. The project focused on identifying ways to reduce financial risks and enhance the commercial viability of fortified products targeted at low- and middle-income consumers.

The team conducted a landscape analysis of India’s nutrition policy environment, assessed opportunities and challenges in last-mile distribution, and benchmarked best practices from public and private sector initiatives in India and abroad. Special attention was given to opportunities for corporate engagement in public health initiatives through responsible marketing, policy advocacy, and collaboration with grassroots institutions.

Drawing on stakeholder interviews and policy research, the team recommended a phased approach for AFN product expansion that integrates business viability with social impact. Supporting elements include alignment with India’s public nutrition goals, use of enabling policy tools, and integration into PepsiCo’s broader business and sustainability objectives. The strategy is designed to create long-term commercial value while contributing to efforts that address micronutrient deficiencies in underserved populations.
