Time Out Funding

Time Out Program

SIPA values faculty–student engagement beyond the classroom as an essential part of a dynamic academic community. The Time Out program supports informal gatherings between SIPA students and faculty over breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

For students, these sessions are intended to encourage open, candid conversations about coursework, academic expectations, and questions related to career paths and professional opportunities.

For faculty, the program offers an opportunity to engage with students on topics that inform teaching, research, and broader school priorities.

  • Funding is provided at $25 per person, up to a maximum of $150 per event.
  • Each event must include at least one SIPA faculty member or administrator and two students.
  • Students may host one event per semester.
  • SIPA faculty and administrators may be reimbursed for up to two events per academic year.
  • The event must include a meal: breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
  • Events must take place outside of class and outside regular class meeting hours.
  • Request forms must be submitted at least one week (five business days) in advance of the event.
  • Advance approval is required prior to holding the event. Do not assume funding will be available or that expenses will be reimbursed without prior authorization.
  • Funding is provided on a reimbursement basis only. Vouchers are not permitted.
  • All events must comply with applicable Columbia University and SIPA health and safety requirements. Funding may be denied if these requirements are not met.

  • Following the event, submit a Travel and Business Expense Report through Concur.

    The report must include:

    • Original itemized receipt(s) from the event
    • Credit or debit card statement, if applicable
    • Approval email from the Office of Student Affairs

    Expense reports should be submitted within two weeks of the event. Detailed submission instructions will be included in the approval email. 

    Reimbursement is limited to $150 per event, subject to available funding and prior approval.
