ReNew Energy Global plc, one of India’s largest independent power producers, aims to improve its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance and global positioning amid evolving sustainability standards. This Capstone project supports that goal by delivering a strategic analysis of ESG practices in the global clean energy sector and offering actionable recommendations tailored to the ReNew business and regulatory environment.

The Capstone team’s focus was on three key areas: a comparative analysis of ESG performance among peer companies across India, the US, and Europe; an evaluation of how ESG strategies influence financial outcomes such as the cost of capital; and an assessment of emerging ESG risks and disclosure trends. The team analyzed ESG scores and public filings from top-rated companies using benchmarks such as the S&P Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), CDP, and MSCI. ReNew’s ESG performance was evaluated against industry leaders including Iberdrola, Brookfield Renewable, Engie, and JSW Energy. The recommendations of the team were designed to strengthen ReNew’s ESG ratings and stakeholder credibility. In the short term, the team advised setting measurable biodiversity and recycling targets, disclosing outcome-based workforce metrics, expanding ESG supplier audits, and publishing environmental and social impact assessments. For the long term, the team recommended adopting a “net gain” biodiversity approach, developing a just transition workforce strategy, formalizing inclusive hiring policies, and establishing public targets for board and executive-level diversity. The project equips ReNew with a roadmap to close ESG gaps, reduce risk, and advance its position as a global sustainability leader.
