In 2007, 49% of U.S. electricity came from coal while only 2% came from renewable sources. Coal extraction and combustion cause major environmental and health problems, including soil erosion, acid rain, smog, mercury pollution, and CO₂ emissions. As electricity demand grows, reducing coal dependence is essential to limit environmental damage and protect human health.
