Fall 2011

At the request of the Inter-American Development Bank, the SIPA team conducted research into potential partners that could provide equity or blended capital for projects and social enterprises, or companies with a development focus but a for-profit business model. The IDB is specifically interested in entities that invest in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC); in projects in the education, healthcare or climate change/clean energy sectors; and have the capacity to invest at least US$1 million (mn) per deal.

The SIPA team conducted an extensive review of entities with an “impact investing” mandate that might be suitable partners for the IDB. The universe comprised 250 plus entities including family offices, large private wealth managers, venture capital funds and a small number of high net worth individuals. The resulting final report provided recommendations to IDB on means to promote the growth of the impact industry and increase its participation with the emerging universe of participants. The team noted that the potential partners targeted for the study varied widely in terms of size, structure, and financial goals and might be more effectively pursued using targeted strategies geared towards particular entity types.
