Spring 2014

For a second year in a row, SIPA has collaborated with Fundacion Carvajal on a workshop project in Colombia. Fundacion Carvajal is one of the oldest nonprofit organizations in Colombia dedicated to promoting socio-economic development and improving the quality of life of vulnerable communities in impoverished regions of Colombia, mainly in Cali and Valle de Cauca. In 2012, Carvajal extended their operations to Buenaventura, one of the most important ports in Colombia, with the aim to support its most marginalized communities whose population is mostly of Afro-Colombian descent. The SIPA team was asked to analyze Carvajal’s current income-generation programs in this area and provide recommendations on further expanding and improving access to locally appropriate employment and microenterprise opportunities.
