Impact Evaluation of Jitegemee’s Vocational Training Program in Kenya
Jitegemee, Inc. exists to provide street children with access to formal and vocational education. It is committed to helping children overcome all the obstacles that interfere with success in school by providing books, school uniforms, shoes, food, tuition/tutoring, exam fees and emergency medical care for former street children in elementary school. In January 2003, Kenya introduced free and compulsory education for children under 14. Recognizing that children over 14 were falling through the cracks, Jitegemee dramatically expanded its vocational training program to serve more of these children. The vocational program provides young people with hands-on work experience in trades of their choosing, as well as access to capital for tools essential to self-sufficiency. The objective of the workshop was to carry out an impact evaluation of it vocational training and support program, including the provision of tools and microloans to graduates of the program.
