 Private sector net zero commitments increasingly rely on ecosystem restoration projects to offset emissions, yet inconsistencies in impact measurement and reporting undermine their credibility and effectiveness. Corporate restoration efforts often prioritize carbon sequestration metrics, such as hectares restored, while overlooking broader ecological and socioeconomic outcomes. An analysis of 78 companies with restoration-based net zero pledges revealed significant gaps in transparency, particularly in reporting community impacts and ecosystem service benefits. While ecosystem-related metrics were more commonly disclosed, socioeconomic indicators—such as livelihood improvements, stakeholder engagement, and local economic benefits—were reported far less frequently, creating risks of ineffective implementation and public skepticism.

Improving restoration outcomes requires standardized measurement frameworks that capture environmental and social co-benefits while ensuring accountability. A stepwise framework was developed to guide companies through restoration planning, implementation, and disclosure, emphasizing target setting, stakeholder engagement, and transparent reporting practices. Incorporating third-party verification, selecting appropriate ecosystem and socioeconomic indicators, and establishing partnerships with local stakeholders significantly strengthen project effectiveness and credibility. Expanding reporting beyond carbon metrics improves decision-making and helps ensure restoration contributes meaningfully to biodiversity conservation, climate mitigation, and community resilience. Strengthened reporting frameworks also help companies avoid greenwashing risks while aligning restoration investments with long-term environmental and social sustainability goals.
