This capstone project conducts a comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory for the National Audubon Society to establish a baseline for future emissions reduction efforts. Recognizing the growing urgency of climate change and the organization’s role in environmental stewardship, the team assessed emissions across four primary categories: buildings, transportation, paper use, and landholdings. Using established methodologies and data collection tools, the analysis quantifies emissions and identifies key sources, with a particular focus on energy consumption in facilities and operational activities.

The report provides targeted recommendations to reduce Audubon’s carbon footprint while integrating sustainability into its organizational practices. These include improving energy efficiency in buildings, transitioning to renewable energy sources, optimizing transportation practices, and reducing paper consumption through lifecycle-based strategies. The project also emphasizes the importance of institutionalizing sustainability through data tracking, performance monitoring, and staff engagement. By establishing a clear emissions baseline and outlining actionable strategies, the report enables Audubon to align its operations with its conservation mission and demonstrates how non-profit organizations can lead by example in addressing climate change.
