This project evaluated how green building practices could contribute to improved environmental health, sustainability, and affordable housing in New York City. Prepared for the Manhattan Borough President’s Office, the report explored how the built environment influences energy consumption, water use, indoor air quality, and urban environmental conditions. The study examined the growing importance of green building standards and technologies, including energy efficiency measures, sustainable materials, water conservation, and design strategies that reduce the environmental footprint of buildings. While green building practices were gaining momentum in commercial and high-end residential development, the report found that they had been adopted less frequently in affordable housing due to perceived costs and limited awareness among developers and policymakers.
The team analyzed regulatory frameworks, economic incentives, and market barriers that affect the adoption of green building practices in New York City. Based on this analysis, the report recommended that the Borough President’s Office promote education and outreach initiatives to increase awareness of the benefits of green building, particularly in underserved communities. Proposed strategies included public information campaigns, educational programs for community boards, and partnerships with developers and housing organizations to demonstrate the economic and health benefits of sustainable construction. By emphasizing the links between environmental sustainability, public health, and urban development, the project highlighted how local leadership and policy advocacy could accelerate the adoption of green building practices and contribute to healthier, more resilient cities.
