The report examines sustainability planning across U.S. municipalities and identifies best practices, tools, and successful approaches that communities can adapt to their own environmental, social, and economic circumstances. Its goal is to help local governments lower costs, improve environmental performance, and meet current needs while safeguarding resources for future generations.

Key areas include transportation, land-use planning, biodiversity and open-space conservation, energy and climate change, water management, solid waste and recycling, green buildings, green procurement, and hazard mitigation.

The handbook emphasizes moving from planning to implementation, identifying four critical elements for successful municipal sustainability efforts: leadership, community involvement, measurable goals and indicators, and linking sustainability objectives to funding.
