This report examines the Energy for Our Future Act (H.R. 1945), proposed legislation designed to improve energy efficiency and promote renewable energy development in the United States. The report highlights the country’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels, particularly coal, for electricity generation. In the mid-2000s, approximately two-thirds of U.S. electricity production came from fossil fuels, which produce significant environmental and health impacts. Coal combustion releases pollutants such as carbon dioxide, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and heavy metals, contributing to climate change, acid rain, and respiratory diseases. The report also examines environmental damages associated with coal extraction methods, including mountaintop removal mining and groundwater contamination. As energy demand continues to grow, these impacts underscore the need for policies that promote cleaner and more sustainable energy systems.

The proposed legislation seeks to address these issues by expanding renewable energy production and encouraging greater energy efficiency. The Act proposes removing fossil fuel subsidies, creating incentives for renewable energy technologies, and establishing renewable electricity generation requirements for utilities. Solar power receives particular attention due to its vast potential as a clean and widely available energy source. The bill also proposes investments in research and development and mechanisms such as carbon trading markets to support the transition to low-carbon energy systems. Although renewable technologies continue to face technological and economic barriers, the report concludes that policy support and technological innovation can significantly increase renewable energy adoption. Expanding renewable energy and improving efficiency are presented as key strategies for reducing environmental impacts while meeting growing energy demand.
