Corruption & Environmental Degradation A project for: Transparency International - Spring
This report examines how corruption can undermine environmental protection and sustainable resource management by weakening governance systems and regulatory oversight. Prepared for Transparency International, the study analyzes how corruption affects environmental decision-making across sectors such as natural resource extraction, infrastructure development, and environmental regulation. Environmental governance is particularly vulnerable to corruption because it often involves valuable resources, complex permitting systems, and competing economic interests. When corruption occurs—through bribery, political influence, or regulatory capture—it can weaken enforcement of environmental laws and allow environmentally harmful activities to proceed without adequate oversight. The report highlights how such governance failures may contribute to illegal logging, pollution, and unsustainable resource exploitation while reducing the effectiveness of environmental policies intended to protect ecosystems and public health.
To address these risks, the report proposes policy strategies aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability, and institutional integrity in environmental governance. Recommendations emphasize improving access to environmental information, increasing transparency in permitting and regulatory processes, and strengthening oversight mechanisms within environmental agencies. The report also highlights the importance of civil society participation and independent monitoring to ensure accountability in environmental decision-making. Transparency tools—such as public disclosure of environmental permits, monitoring results, and enforcement actions—can help reduce opportunities for corruption and improve public trust in environmental institutions. The study concludes that integrating anti-corruption measures into environmental policy frameworks can strengthen environmental governance, improve regulatory effectiveness, and support more sustainable management of natural resources.
