This report analyzes the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and its role in addressing global biodiversity loss through international cooperation and ecosystem-based management. Biological diversity encompasses the variability of life at genetic, species, and ecosystem levels and supports critical ecosystem services that sustain human societies. Scientific evidence shows that biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rate due to human activities, including habitat destruction, climate change, overexploitation of resources, pollution, and the introduction of invasive species. These pressures threaten ecological stability as well as economic sectors that depend on functioning ecosystems, such as agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. The CBD represents the first comprehensive global agreement aimed at conserving biodiversity while balancing environmental protection with sustainable development objectives.
The Convention establishes three primary goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources. The report examines policy tools promoted under the Convention, including the expansion of protected areas, ecosystem-based management strategies, economic incentives for conservation, and stronger integration between biodiversity protection and development policies. It also highlights the importance of international collaboration, scientific research, and information sharing to support effective biodiversity governance. Although the CBD provides an important framework for global conservation efforts, the report notes that its effectiveness depends largely on national implementation and political commitment by participating countries. Strengthening domestic policies and improving coordination between international environmental agreements remain essential for achieving the Convention’s long-term objectives of biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource management.
