Agroforestry offers significant potential to address land degradation, climate change, and rural poverty by integrating trees with agricultural production. Comparative analysis across Brazil, India, and Mexico reveals that agroforestry can improve ecosystem resilience, enhance food security, and support sustainable livelihoods, yet adoption remains constrained by structural, economic, and institutional barriers. Key challenges include insecure land tenure, limited market access, and insufficient financial incentives to offset the delayed economic returns associated with tree-based systems. While governments have implemented various policies to promote agroforestry, inconsistent policy design and weak institutional support often limit their effectiveness.

Successful agroforestry expansion depends on addressing these structural barriers through integrated policy approaches. Strong incentives, including financial subsidies, technical assistance, and market support, can encourage adoption, particularly among smallholder farmers. Inclusive governance structures that incorporate local communities and Indigenous knowledge improve both implementation and outcomes. The findings demonstrate that agroforestry policies must balance environmental objectives with economic viability to achieve large-scale adoption. By strengthening policy coherence, improving institutional capacity, and aligning incentives with long-term environmental benefits, agroforestry can play a critical role in advancing climate mitigation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable rural development.
