Student Leader Spotlight: Thaissa Avena da Cruz Antunes
My name is Thaissa Avena, though many at SIPA know me as Thai. I’m a Fulbright Student from Brazil with extensive experience in international cooperation. Most recently, I worked at the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy, where I focused on promoting clean, affordable, and secure energy through global collaboration. I’m passionate about formulating development projects that advance climate justice and expand access to clean energy in developing countries. My experience also includes internships with the British Embassy’s Science and Innovation Network and GIZ Brazil’s Energy Program. When I’m not at SIPA, you’ll likely find me soaking up the sun, preferably at the beach, either reading or playing sports.
Advice to SIPA students: Being at Columbia means being surrounded by incredible people with impressive backgrounds, so it’s natural to feel a bit intimidated at times. But remember to embrace your history and identity—they are what make you uniquely valuable. If you’re here, it’s because you already share the same drive, passion, and commitment that brought all of us to this moment.
