SIPA’s Alan Taylor Appointed to UK’s Monetary Policy Committee
NEW YORK, August 19 — Columbia SIPA is thrilled to announce that SIPA Professor Alan Taylor was just appointed as an external member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee. Professor Taylor will serve a three-year term starting in September.
Appointed by the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, external members may serve up to two three-year terms. Their role is to ensure that the Committee and the Bank benefits from outside thinking and independent expertise. The Monetary Policy Committee oversees the UK’s monetary policy and is comprised of the Governor of the Bank of England, three Deputy Governors, the Bank of England’s Chief Economist and four external members.
“It is both a great honor and a great responsibility to join the Bank of England as an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee,” Professor Taylor said. “Right now, central banks are facing a challenging moment for monetary policy, and I look forward to contributing to the decision-making process.”
Professor Taylor is a world-renowned economist who joined SIPA as a professor of international and public affairs in 2023. He has served as a senior advisor at Morgan Stanley, PIMCO, and McKinsey. He is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, a research fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research, and a visiting scholar at the Bank of England.
He has published countless papers in leading academic journals in the fields of macroeconomics, international economics, finance and economic history, including a widely cited post-mortem analysis of the 2008 financial crisis and a book on Argentina’s troubled economic history. He is also the foundational thinker behind the “trilemma” students are taught in introductory macroeconomics courses.
“The UK has made a deeply wise decision,” said Keren Yarhi-Milo, dean of Columbia SIPA. “Alan is not just a brilliant economist and public intellectual; he is a committed public servant. This appointment by the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer is a testament to his many contributions to the field and to the incisive wisdom he brings to his work.”
