Dean’s Message

Presidential Transition

Posted Mar 29 2025

Dear SIPA Community,

I write today following the news of the presidential leadership transition at Columbia. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Dr. Katrina Armstrong, who, after leading the University with courage and clarity through an intensely challenging period, now returns to her role as CEO of Columbia University Irving Medical Center

I extend my full support to Acting President Claire Shipman, who was most recently cochair of the Board of Trustees and a member since 2013. She is also an alumna of SIPA’s MIA program and a champion of the School. Acting President Shipman is well known to our community, having participated in many SIPA events over the years and engaged with students and faculty. Many of us at SIPA have had the privilege of working closely with her and I know that the unique blend of competencies she brings to this role, drawing on her years as a journalist, writer, global advocate and — yes — her SIPA education, will be an asset and a stabilizing force for the university at this moment. I am confident that her unwavering commitment to Columbia will ensure continuity and care for our University community while the trustees complete a presidential search.

This has been a tumultuous period, but the core of our mission and our work remains unchanged. I am continuously inspired by the dedication and tenacity of our students, staff and faculty. I look forward to supporting Acting President Shipman as we move ahead.

Sincerely,

Keren Yarhi-Milo
