The SIPA community mourns Peter Sang MPA-EPM ’10, a vice president and research analyst at Lazard Asset Management who passed away suddenly on July 20.

Sang was a consummate student of economic policy and an astute researcher of emerging market sovereign debt markets. As the son of Chinese immigrants to the Dominican Republic who went on to study in Canada and then the United States, he was at home in many worlds. He befriended many souls and worked tirelessly for the economic development of some of the least developed countries around the globe.

Fellow alumni remember Sang as one of the School’s most enthusiastic ambassadors and volunteers—an indefatigable networker and friend who was devoted to serving Columbia and SIPA, his local community, and his professional colleagues. He joined the board of the SIPA Alumni Association in 2016 and served as co-chair of its careers committee for the last five years. In that capacity Sang organized numerous networking opportunities and other programs for alumni and current students; many recent graduates owe their current positions to his selfless networking skills.

Sang was particularly dedicated to the Program in Economic Policy Management. Over the years his fervent love of the program, its goals, and its community inspired many students to enroll.

Maro Titus MPA ’93, who co-chaired the careers committee with Sang, remembered her colleague: “Through all my years of service to and networking through SIPA, I've not encountered many people as purely devoted to the mission and success of our school as Peter. He never said no to anyone, helped countless people find jobs and other forms of career success, and supported his friends.”

Thanks to the staff members and alumni who contributed to this note of remembrance.

To honor Peter’s legacy, a group of his fellow SIPA Alumni Association board members, SIPA classmates, and Lazard colleagues came together to create the Peter Sang Memorial Fund. This fellowship will provide critical student financial assistance to SIPA students who have overcome systemic challenges and demonstrated a strong commitment to diversity. It recognizes Peter’s dedicated service to the SIPA community and his deep commitment to helping SIPA students. To participate in creating this tangible reminder of Peter’s enduring impact, please click here. For more information, please contact Ambareen Naqvi MPA ’13, SIPA’s Director of Development.
