How are we treating essential workers amid the COVID-19 pandemic?

Posted Oct 25 2022

A new study by SIPA’s Alexander Hertel-Fernandez and Suresh Naidu (with Columbia’s Adam Reich and Patrick Youngblood) highlights important racial disparities in the #COVID workplace. In a survey of 2,662 essential workers for the Roosevelt Institute, they found that:

— Black essential workers are nearly twice as likely as white essential workers to express concern about infection risk.

— Workers facing financial hardship, Black and Latinx workers, and younger workers are especially likely to say they would still go to work with a fever.

— Across a variety of outcomes, union members report better COVID-19 workplace practices and outcomes than nonmembers.
