On November 6 SIPA hosted a faculty panel discussion, Election 2024: What Happened and What’s Next?, to analyze the outcome of the US presidential election and what lies ahead. The discussion was part of After the Ballot: A Post-Election Gathering, an event organized to provide support and space for SIPA students, staff, and faculty to gather and process the outcome of the US election.

The conversation touched on the implications for US democracy, the outlook and challenges for reproductive rights, and the impacts of a Republican-controlled House on the foreign policy agenda of a Trump administration on China, Russia, and the Middle East, among other issues. The panelists discussed factors that shaped the election outcome, including increased Republican registrations in key battleground states, the gender gap, economic hardship, and the role of African American voters. They also spoke on the impacts of misogyny and racism on the election, and emphasized the need for the US to lead with humility in addressing global challenges going forward.

The event featured Michael Nutter, David N. Dinkins Professor of Professional Practice In Urban And Public Affairs, and former mayor of Philadelphia; Ambassador Victoria Nuland, Shelby Cullom Davis Professor in the Practice of International Diplomacy; Robert Shapiro, Wallace S. Sayre Professor of Government and professor of international and public affairs; and Alexander Hertel-Fernandez, associate professor of international and public affairs. The discussion was moderated by Timothy Naftali, a senior research scholar at SIPA.
