Award-Winning Journalist Nadav Eyal to Join SIPA in 2024–25 Academic Year
Nadav Eyal, a prominent journalist and award-winning author, will join Columbia SIPA on August 1 for the 2024–25 Academic Year as a senior research scholar, with an affiliation at the Institute of Global Politics.
Eyal is a senior columnist for Yediot Ahronot, Israel's most circulated newspaper, and the news website Ynet, where he writes a weekly column devoted to Israeli decision-making, regional affairs and global politics. He is also a senior commentator for Keshet 12, Israel’s most watched TV channel. Eyal is a winner of the Sokolov Award, Israel’s equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize, and is the author of the 2021 bestselling book, Revolt: The Worldwide Uprising Against Globalization.
With over two decades of experience covering Middle Eastern and international politics for Israeli media, he plans to focus on Israel’s foreign policy and domestic politics, and the global rise of populism and nationalism and their effects on the liberal order while at Columbia.
“SIPA is a fantastic school in nurturing individuals into leadership roles,” Eyal said, explaining his motivation for joining Columbia’s faculty. “Few places can match its capacity to train future leaders in problem-solving approaches to real-world challenges.”
Eyal’s teaching and research align with SIPA’s commitment to understanding why democracy globally is backsliding, and his coursework will fill a gap in the curriculum.
“For the last quarter-century, my job has been to cover decision-makers and policies — sometimes policies over life and death,” he added. “It will be my privilege to be able to contribute to conversations on global affairs and provide fact-based analysis, drawing on my long experience covering senior decision-making.”
During his time at SIPA, Eyal will also write about the 2024 US presidential election in his weekly column for Yediot Ahronot. He’s been covering US elections for the paper since 2008, and before the presidential elections in 2016, created a series of short documentaries called Trumpland, which examined the global rise of populism and the serious prospect of a Trump victory.
More information about his courses will be published in the SIPA course bulletin later this summer.
