Leveraging Public Policy to Enhance Sustainable Procurement

Spring 2023

Given the changing environment, companies like Dell are encouraged to further embed ESG objectives into their procurement strategies to address compliance risks and meet increasingly stringent stakeholder expectations. Governments are passing regulations that incentivize carbon emission reductions in support of net zero and sustainability initiatives. To that end, Dell is interested in supporting and encouraging its suppliers to become more sustainable in order to help meet its own sustainability commitments.

The Capstone team was asked to focus on locations where Dell's main suppliers operate, including China, Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. The team arrived at a detailed analysis of the renewable energy landscape in each location, including an overview of the relevant policies and programs, an examination of the limitations of renewables, a look at emerging trends, and location-specific recommendations for Dell suppliers. The recommendations could equip suppliers with valuable information about the applicable regulations and incentives, as well as the potential obstacles they may face.

The full report provides both program and eligibility details, as well as implementation guidelines to support each of the location-specific recommendations. While these recommendations represent current opportunities, supply chains are not static. Thus, each section includes an analysis of the future outlook to help guide future supply chain decision-making.  The report could also help Dell in future supply chain decisions. Through this initiative, Dell will set an example for other companies to pursue sustainability goals.
