How can a country project its soft power in the United Nations?

The aim of this project is to critically analyze efforts by governments to increase their soft power within the international community and multilateral system, with the United Nations at its core. It is targeting the development of future diplomats and future representatives of international organizations with an understanding of the prospects of contributing to the 2030 Agenda and the SDG as a driver of global action of governments and international institutions in the coming decades. The team will assess dynamics related to geopolitical influence, financial and economic relations, trade, and diplomatic relations, to understand the concept of soft power. Then, they will focus on the work of Member States in the United Nations, to understand how countries compare against each other in dimensions such as diplomatic visibility, political alliances, financial contributions, staff representation, influence in negotiations and others. They will assess the specific case of Portugal, and the development of the country’s influence in the UN since its accession in 1955.
