Green-Digital Nexus: Accelerating Green Economy Transition through Digital Technologies

In 2020, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) published its new Strategic and Capital Framework 2021 – 2025, identifying the digital and green transitions as two of three crosscutting strategic priorities for the Bank, alongside promoting equality of opportunity. With such an ambitious agenda, the EBRD is interested in exploring further the synergies between the green and digital nexus. More specifically, the EBRD is seeking to understand how digital technologies can accelerate the green transition of companies toward net zero in three specific sectors: agribusiness, manufacturing and telecommunication, media and technology (TMT). While those three sectors have significant environmental footprint, they also have a great digitalisation potential. By analysing real-world case studies across the three sectors and conducting thorough research, the aim is to understand how the introduction of digital technologies can foster the green transition at the industry level and to identify strategies, tools, and best practices that can enable them to integrate digital technologies into their operations, thereby promoting sustainability, reducing environmental impact, and achieving long-term economic growth.
