Estonia: Media Freedom, Human Rights and Global Outreach in a Time of Global Turbulence

Advisor

Semester

Spring 2024

The 2024 Capstone team will build on the work of the 2018 - 2023 Capstone teams with a particular emphasis on the need for effective international governance and the international rule of law system, advancing and protecting freedom (with a special focus on digital media freedom) and human rights. The Capstone team has been asked to draft reports which can be presented by Estonia at international forums and to prepare a final report to guide Estonia on how it can and should go forward in a world where “traditional” international governance, the respect for human rights and media freedom generally is being undermined and threatened, whether by rising nationalism or violation of international law.  In short, how can the international governance system be preserved, advanced and secured to meet the on-going challenges, especially in light of the continuous increase in misinformation, false “facts,” as well as the personal attacks on journalists around the world. In order to achieve the objectives of global outreach, there will also be the creation of an outreach PR program, with a focus on New York and the Northeast as a model platform for similar initiatives elsewhere.
