Spring 2024

Green hydrogen is rapidly emerging as a pivotal energy source on a global scale, expected to play a critical role in fulfilling climate commitments. With its potential to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors like heavy industries, green hydrogen has garnered significant attention worldwide. India, in particular, is actively embracing the clean energy transition. The Indian government has taken proactive measures to prioritize the development of a green hydrogen ecosystem, exemplified by initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission 2023 and the National Green Hydrogen Policy 2022. These policy measures are driving efforts to unlock a market of at least 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen, potentially reaching 10 MMT while tapping into a growing export market. However, the successful realization of this endeavor hinges upon the availability of affordable and reliable green hydrogen. RMI has asked the Capstone team to support the RMI India Program team in unlocking bottlenecks in the renewable energy policy and regulatory ecosystem that continue to hinder the development of green hydrogen projects in India.
