Humanitarian Policy Focus Area Associate Director; Lecturer in International and Public Affairs (Part-time)


Personal Details

Susannah Friedman is an expert on humanitarian crises. Since 2005, she has worked with international NGOs to prepare for and respond to natural disasters and complex emergencies. Susannah currently serves as CARE USA's Senior Director for Humanitarian Programming and Policy.  Prior to her current role, Susannah led CARE USA's humanitarian policy work and managed humanitarian efforts in multiple contexts across the Asia / Pacific region and East Africa. Susannah is Associate Director for SIPA’s Humanitarian Policy Focus area; she also teaches a course on the management of humanitarian emergencies. She holds a Master of International Affairs in International Security Policy from Columbia University and Bachelor of Arts in History from University of Michigan. Susannah started working in international affairs as a Peace Corps Volunteer. She served in Nepal from 2001 to 2003 as a Water and Sanitation Coordinator.
