Starting in Spring with London Lee ’26!
Are you thinking about starting SIPA in the spring and want to learn more about the experience? We got you covered! Meet London Lee!
London Lee is studying her Masters of Public Administration (MPA) with a concentration in Urban and Social Policy and specialization in Leadership, Innovation, and Design. London is originally from Seattle, Washington and prior to SIPA, she worked in corporate social responsibility within the technology sector.
Why did you apply to SIPA?
SIPA caught my eye for several reasons: its diverse course offerings, world-class faculty, international student body, and robust NYC network. Beyond the core curriculum, I loved the ‘choose your own adventure’ approach, giving students the freedom to tailor coursework to their interests and passions. The mix of academic professors and practitioners bringing real-world experience to the classroom was also a big draw. As someone with prior work experience, I wanted a program that blended practical and academic perspectives.
The globally diverse student body was another major appeal. I was excited to learn from classmates with vastly different backgrounds and be immersed in a dynamic and multicultural environment. Lastly, SIPA’s strong ties to NYC, offering access to distinguished speakers and leading global organizations, were incredibly exciting.
Overall, SIPA seemed like the ideal place to explore a wide range of interests, connect with passionate and mission-driven individuals, and develop expertise in new areas. I’m happy to say that my experience so far has lived up to those expectations.
Why did you decide to apply in the Spring versus the Fall?
Opting for the Spring made the most sense for me as I was committed to my job through the end of 2024. The later start date aligned better with my schedule and allowed me to quickly transition from work to school, rather than waiting another year.
What are the benefits to applying in the Spring?
Applying in the Spring offers several advantages. Students begin with a smaller cohort, which can be less overwhelming and allows for more intimate connections among peers. The smaller orientation also provides opportunities for personal interaction with the dean, faculty and program concentration staff. In addition, J-termers get the benefit of pursuing two summer internships, which allows for more opportunities for practical experience in their desired field.
What advice do you have for students who want to apply in the Spring?
Starting as a J-termer at SIPA comes with a unique set of opportunities and challenges. While integrating with the Fall cohort can be tricky, my advice is to participate in as many events as possible, keep an open mind, and get involved in campus activities. These approaches really help in building connections and finding your place in the SIPA community.
There are a few other things to keep in mind. Currently, internship funding for J-term students isn’t available until the following summer once you’ve completed two semesters, so factor this into your planning. Also, as the last group to sign up for classes, you may face some limitations in course selection. While this can be frustrating, it’s important to stay flexible and have backup options.
Ultimately, the experience is what you make it. Say yes, take advantage of opportunities and don’t be afraid to try new things!
What is your favorite aspect about your J-termer cohort?
My favorite aspect of the J-termer cohort is definitely the warmth and friendliness of the group. Everyone I’ve met has been incredibly kind, open-minded, and eager to make a positive impact on the world. The global and diverse nature of the group also provides an enriching experience!
