Ready for the Future: Columbia SIPA’s Immersive Journey to China (Part 3)

Day 1: Arrival in Shanghai and Independent City Exploration
After settling into our hotel, we had a fascinating visit to the Municipal People's Congress, where we delved into the inner workings of the city's legislative process. This experience provided valuable insight into how policies are debated, formulated, and implemented in one of China's most populous and economically significant cities. The visit also shed light on the role of the Municipal People's Congress in urban planning, economic development, and public services. We were particularly impressed by their efforts to engage with citizens and adapt policies to the city's evolving needs.
Then, the day concluded with a free session to explore Shanghai independently. I took the opportunity to stroll along the river, soaking in the city’s vibrant atmosphere. The illuminated skyline offered a glimpse into Shanghai's charm, and I wrapped up the evening by enjoying a delicious hotpot meal—a perfect introduction to the city's culinary offerings.
Day 2: Diving into Shanghai’s Financial and Social Landscape
Our second day in Shanghai was packed with insights into the city's rapid development and global impact. It took us deep into the city’s role as a global financial powerhouse. The day began with a visit to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, where we explored its pivotal role in shaping China’s financial markets since its re-establishment in the 1990s. As one of the largest stock exchanges in the world by market capitalization, it symbolizes China’s economic rise and its integration into global finance.
During the visit, we gained insight into the exchange’s operations, from its listing process to the mechanisms that drive its indices. The discussions highlighted how the Shanghai Stock Exchange serves as a platform for both domestic and international companies, playing a crucial role in funding China’s burgeoning industries and infrastructure projects. We also learned about its influence on global investors and its commitment to innovation through digitalization and green finance.
A memorable moment was posing with the iconic bronze bull statue outside the exchange. The bull, a symbol of optimism and prosperity in stock markets, ties directly to the term "bullish," which signifies a strong and upward market trend. Standing next to this powerful symbol was a reminder of the hope and determination that drive financial growth and innovation.
Next, we visited the New Development Bank (NDB). The NDB, established in 2014 by the BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), focuses on funding infrastructure and sustainable development projects across its member countries. During our visit, we had the unique opportunity to engage with the research department, where experts explained the bank’s strategy for addressing key challenges in emerging economies. These included gaps in infrastructure, climate change resilience, and the need for inclusive growth.
We learned about some of the bank’s landmark projects, such as renewable energy initiatives, water supply systems, and sustainable transportation networks. Each project highlighted NDB’s commitment to green finance, with a strong emphasis on ensuring environmental sustainability alongside economic progress.
What stood out was the NDB’s distinctive approach to development finance. Unlike traditional development banks, the NDB focuses on equal partnerships, giving member countries an equal voice and vote in decision-making processes. This philosophy aims to address the historical power imbalances often seen in global financial institutions and to foster trust among its members.
One of the highlights of the visit was an in-depth discussion about the bank’s role in financing sustainable development goals (SDGs). By leveraging its capital and partnerships, the NDB aims to close funding gaps in critical areas such as clean energy, education, healthcare, and digital infrastructure. Their innovative funding strategies include issuing green bonds, which allow investors to contribute directly to environmentally conscious projects.
The day ended on a heartwarming note with a visit to Adream, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving education access in rural China. Their efforts to bring quality education to even the most remote areas were inspiring. Dinner that evening introduced us to Shanghai's more mild and internationally influenced cuisine, showcasing yet another facet of the city's diversity.
Day 3: A Journey Through Shanghai’s History, Innovation, and Nighttime Splendor
On our final day in China, we explored the Changbai 228 Block, a historic housing complex dating back to 1952, which was initially built for workers during China’s industrialization. The visit offered a glimpse into the everyday lives of past generations and the city’s evolving urban fabric.
From history to innovation, we then headed to NIO, one of China’s leading electric vehicle companies. Experiencing their cutting-edge technology and understanding the philosophy driving their brand underscored Shanghai’s position at the forefront of global innovation. A knowledgeable guide walked us through the core pillars of NIO’s philosophy: design, performance, and sustainability. From their advanced battery-swapping technology, which enables EVs to recharge in minutes rather than hours, to their autonomous driving systems powered by artificial intelligence, every aspect of NIO’s approach felt forward-thinking and impactful.
One of the most exciting parts of the visit was exploring their flagship vehicle models. We sat inside their electric SUVs and sedans, marveling at the seamless integration of luxury, technology, and sustainability. The interiors boasted minimalist designs paired with state-of-the-art features like voice-assisted controls and in-car digital assistants.
The team also introduced us to their NIO Power initiative, which includes a network of battery-swapping stations and mobile charging vans. This infrastructure makes owning an EV more convenient and addresses one of the major barriers to EV adoption—range anxiety. It was fascinating to see how NIO is tackling real-world challenges in sustainability while enhancing the user experience.
Another highlight was learning about the company’s commitment to fostering a community of users. NIO has developed unique spaces called NIO Houses, which serve as a blend of showrooms and social hubs where customers can work, relax, or attend events. This approach exemplifies NIO’s belief that owning an EV isn’t just about the vehicle itself but about being part of a broader lifestyle and community.
Finally, we delved into the company’s global aspirations. With an expanding presence in Europe and plans to enter other international markets, NIO is positioning itself as a key player in the global EV industry. Their commitment to sustainable mobility and innovative business models makes them a company to watch in the coming years.
The visit left us inspired by NIO’s vision for a future where transportation is not only efficient and eco-friendly but also deeply integrated into everyday life. It was a glimpse into how technology can drive sustainability and reshape industries for the better.
As the sun set, we concluded our journey with a breathtaking cruise along the Huangpu River. Shanghai’s nighttime beauty unfolded before us, with the skyline to the right dazzling with light shows, and the left showcasing the city's old colonial architecture—a striking contrast between the modern and historical. The river perfectly captured Shanghai's duality, where tradition meets progress, making it a fitting end to an unforgettable exploration of this vibrant city.
Reflection on Shanghai
Shanghai is a city of contrasts and connections—a place where the past and future coexist in harmony. From its bustling financial district to its historic housing complexes and world-class technological innovations, the city embodies resilience and ambition. Whether through its unique blend of flavors or its dual-sided river views, Shanghai leaves a lasting impression of its dynamic spirit and rich heritage. It’s a city that thrives on movement, progress, and an undeniable sense of possibility.
