This January, I embarked on a transformative 10-day journey to China as part of a joint program between the China-US Exchange Foundation (CUSEF) and China Greater Initiatives (CGI) at Columbia University. Exclusive only for Columbia SIPA students, the program aimed to foster cross-cultural understanding and provide an immersive experience in one of the world’s most dynamic countries. Alongside 25 delegates from 17 countries, I spent the first three days in Beijing, delving into the city’s vibrant culture, historical treasures, academic institutions, and diplomatic and business hubs.

Day 1: Flavors and First Impressions

After arriving in Beijing on January 1st, our first day was a chance to explore independently. I headed straight to the city’s famous night market, a sensory feast of sizzling street food and vibrant energy. From savory Michelin star noodles to tanghulu (candied hawthorn skewers), I indulged in a variety of authentic Chinese dishes. The daring could even sample skewered insects, adding an adventurous twist to the culinary experience.

The evening concluded with a view of Tiananmen Square from afar, its grandeur illuminated under the night sky. Even at a distance, its historical significance was palpable, marking a fitting start to our journey.

Day 2: Diplomacy, Academia, and Business

The second day began with a series of impactful visits. We started at Peking University, engaging in discussions with students and professors about China-US relations and the potential for future cooperation. Their insights offered a unique perspective on international diplomacy and how academia plays a role in shaping global narratives.

Our next stop was Tsinghua University, renowned for its academic rigor and commitment to fostering diversity. Here, we explored how the university supports students’ growth through a wide range of programs. Discussions once again highlighted China-US relations, particularly in sectors that could strengthen bilateral ties.

The afternoon brought us into the professional realm. At China Daily, the nation’s largest news network, we witnessed how they’ve adapted to digital platforms and social media to connect with younger audiences, illustrating the evolution of media in a modern China.

We also met Mr. Michael Hart, President of AmCham Beijing, who shared insights into the business ecosystem in China for US companies. His candid discussion highlighted both the opportunities and challenges of navigating China’s dynamic business environment.

The day ended on a diplomatic note with Mr. Lu Kang, Vice Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee. A former ambassador to Indonesia, he spoke passionately about China’s role in fostering development in Southeast Asia. He highlighted the success of projects like Indonesia’s "Whoosh" bullet train, which dramatically reduced travel time between Jakarta and Bandung from 4 hours to only 45 minutes, showcasing how infrastructure projects strengthen regional ties.

Day 3: Scaling History and Shaping Futures

The third day was dedicated to leisure and exploration, starting with a visit to the Great Wall of China. The climb to the second fortress was physically demanding—my legs trembled on the descent—but the breathtaking view made it worthwhile. Spanning rugged mountains, the Great Wall stands as a symbol of China’s historical resilience and strategic foresight.

Next, we visited the Forbidden City, once home to Chinese emperors. Its grand architecture, adorned in red and gold, reflected the opulence of imperial life. The construction, entirely joint-based without nails, was a testament to the ingenuity of ancient Chinese craftsmanship. As we wandered through its vast courtyards and halls, we were transported back in time, gaining a deeper appreciation for China’s rich history.

The day ended on a hopeful note as we met with high school students eager to pursue higher education in the United States. Sharing our experiences, we offered advice on academic preparation and cultural adaptation. Their enthusiasm and curiosity were inspiring, leaving us optimistic about the future of cross-cultural exchange.

Reflections on Beijing

These first three days in Beijing set the tone for an incredible journey through China. The program seamlessly blended cultural immersion, academic exploration, and professional insights, creating a comprehensive understanding of the country’s past, present, and future.

Beyond the iconic landmarks and engaging discussions, it was the human connections—whether with local scholars, professionals, or students—that made the experience truly unforgettable. This journey not only deepened my understanding of China but also underscored the importance of dialogue and collaboration in bridging cultures and shaping a more interconnected world.

This is just the beginning of our 10-day program. The journey continues as we explore other cities in China, such as Xian and Shanghai, uncovering more about its people, culture, and innovations. Stay tuned for the next chapter of this experience, where we’ll delve deeper into what makes China a fascinating and vital part of our global community.
