Funding Opportunities through the Weatherhead East Asian Institute

The Columbia Weatherhead East Asian Institute (WEAI) offers funding to supplement research, language acquisition, unpaid internships, and dissertation completion to selected Columbia students committed to professional and academic engagement with East and Southeast Asia.

To help students learn more about these upcoming funding opportunities, there are two information sessions about WEAI and Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships and application processes. These sessions will be held on:

About the 2021-2022 WEAI Fellowships and Grants

Applications for summer 2021 and academic year 2021-2022 WEAI fellowships and grants will open on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, and will close on March 12, 2021, at 5:00 pm ET. Students can visit the Institute's funding page for more information and to access the application in January. Eligibility varies depending on the particular funding opportunity.

About the 2021-2022 Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships

Applications for summer 2021 and academic year 2021-2022 FLAS fellowships are now open. The deadline to apply is February 11, 2021, at 1:00 pm ET. Students can apply online here.

FLAS fellowships support students’ enrollment in formal language programs at the 3rd-year level or above in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, and 2nd-year level or above in Tibetan. The WEAI administers the FLAS program application through the Columbia Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
