The Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs seeks a Staff Associate II (Officer of Research) to support policy research on domestic and international nuclear energy and waste topics, reviews of related U.S. statutes and regulations, and to facilitate dialogues on nuclear policy topics such as nuclear liabilities and the India Nuclear Energy Program. They will also be responsible for drafting summaries of these activities.
They are expected to be familiar with both the India Nuclear Energy Program as well as some of the relevant statutes and regulations governing improvements and modernizations to US nuclear power reactor licensing, including but not limited to: the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, 10 CFR Part 50 (Domestic Licensing Of Production And Utilization Facilities), Part 52 (Licenses, Certifications, And Approvals For Nuclear Power Plants).
The incumbent will support CGEP’s Senior Research Scholars by assisting with interpretation of research and conducting literature reviews in support of two Principal Investigators, one in the Nuclear Policy research program and one in the India Energy research program.
Research questions to be investigated may include subjects such as:
- Westinghouse AP 1000 Reactors: challenges in deployment and potential future around the world
- A historical retrospective and policy questions relevant to the 2025 reauthorization of the Price Anderson nuclear liability regime
- Economic impacts of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico over the last 25 years
The incumbent will contribute to outputs including peer-reviewed journal articles, research reports, issue briefs, and/or op-eds. They may present at conferences, seminars and/or events. Under the direction of a PI, they ensure deliverable deadlines are met and coordinate and work with external or partner organizations. An ideal candidate will have a legal background and expertise related to the Indian nuclear energy program.
Main Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include, but are not limited, to the following:
- Contribute to research and literature reviews, collect data, analyze and visualize data using Microsoft Excel and/or other tools
- Contribute regularly to outputs — including peer-reviewed journal articles, research reports, commentaries, blog posts, and/or others –aimed at practical applications and accessibility by practitioners. Contributions will include editing and formatting manuscripts (e.g., formatting citations)
- Support public discussions to improve the general understanding of complex issues
- Under the direction of a PI, assist in the management of report production, rollout, and outreach, including event management, speaker invitations, media interactions, and other activities as needed
- Review articles and law reviews to provide background briefings to Senior Scholars
- Attend conferences, seminars, or events on behalf of the research program, such as the American Nuclear Society Annual meeting.
- Prepare Senior Scholars for Congressional briefings for Senate Energy Natural Resources Committee, Environment and Public Works Committee, House Energy and Commerce Committee.
- Occasional travel to Washington DC for policy-related meetings
- Assist in the coordination and management of program events such as dialogues about the India Nuclear Energy Program or to announce the publication of landmark reports
- Coordinate domestic stakeholder experts for roundtable discussions on specific topics intersecting with nuclear policy, such as state officials or financial stakeholders

- Supervise 2 student employees on program coordination activities

The Reports Coordinator (Staff Associate II) will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day tasks of the Communities Speak Reports & Comms team. This includes assigning and monitoring the work of all staff and student members of the reports & comms team, tracking team progress and goals towards overall project objectives, milestones and deadlines, delegating workload amongst team members and ensuring each member has what is required to successfully complete deliverables on appropriate deadlines. The Staff Associate II will also be responsible for meeting with project leadership weekly to report on team progress and assist in development and delivery strategies. The Staff Associate II will also be called upon to lead specific aspects of training for cohort city staff as it relates to the content and use of survey tools.
The Staff Associate II will guide and facilitate the development, drafting and publishing of all Communities Speaks findings artifacts and communications including press releases, data one-pagers, data and policy reports, memos, op-eds and journal articles, social media content, and associated documentation and literature related to all CS activities. The Staff Associate II will be the point person in working with cohort city staff on their documentation and materials development for all related CS activities, as well as providing guidance and templates for cohort city personnel to use for their own data outcomes. The Staff Associate II will also be responsible for liaising and collaborating with other coordinators on the project on CS framework execution and refinement both for New York City and all cohort cities.
Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in social or quantitative sciences (Master’s degree in political science, Data, Quantitative Analysis, Statistics, public policy, public administration, or social science is preferred) and minimum of 4 years of related experience.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The purpose of the position is to provide research assistance to Prof. Verhoogen (Economics/SIPA). The staff associate I will support research on an experiment on the adoption of energy-efficient motors by firms in the footwear and leather goods industry in Bangladesh. The staff associate I will provide research support for other projects in the broad area of firm productivity and upgrading in developing countries, as requested by Prof. Verhoogen.
It is expected that at least 50% of time will be on the Bangladesh technology-adoption project, and other projects in the broad area of firm productivity and upgrading will make up the remainder.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in public policy, economics, political science, or related field is required. Economics training at advanced undergraduate level. Stata programming skills. Experience working in Bangladesh is not required. Languages besides English are not required.

The School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University invites nominations and applications for the Shelby Cullom Davis Professorship in the Practice of International Diplomacy. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2024.
The Davis Professor will teach courses in the fields of international diplomacy and US Foreign Policy and will direct the International Fellows Program. In addition, the Davis Professor will take a leadership role in addressing one or more of the following global policy challenges: democratic resilience; technology and innovation; geopolitical stability; inclusive prosperity and macroeconomic performance; and climate and sustainable development.
Qualifications
Leadership experience in the US Department of State, National Security Council, or international organizations required. An advanced degree is preferred.
