    Position Description:

    The School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) seeks a Staff Associate III (Officer of Research) to join the team. Communities Speak is a grant-funded project that is a collaboration among the Urban and Social Policy Program at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University with a city-wide network of community organizations and not-for-profit partners. The project aims to expand community data collection in cities, in order to increase government’s capacity to develop policy in response to unanticipated economic and social shocks. Our goal is to provide city government with the research and tools to improve responsiveness to the needs of low-income and minority populations as well as small businesses, who tend to experience the greatest adverse impacts from these shocks.

    The Communities Speak Project is seeking a Staff Associate III . This position will help oversee research and day-to-day operations of the research project including the meetings and workflows of the four main research project subteams (Data, Surveys, Reports and Communications and Partnerships). The Staff Associate III will monitor research progress will also be responsible for coordinating HR and other administrative duties. The Staff Associate III will also have a key role in supporting the Project Director and Lead PI in their strategic planning, long-term research goals and fundraising efforts for project growth. The Staff Associate III will also take a lead role in coordinating with the city government representatives and mayors of potential cohort cities and will be called upon to travel and provide training and professional development of cohort city personnel and other key stakeholders.

    Qualifications:

    Bachelor’s degree or higher in public policy, social sciences, communications, English, data analytics or related field. Minimum of 4-6 years prior professional experience, preferably with a state or local government office.

    The successful candidate will possess both academic experience and a minimum of 10 years’ experience in a government, non-profit, or multilateral organization, dealing with issues related to diplomacy, conflict resolution, international organizations, and/ or peacemaking and peace keeping. The project aims to expand community data collection in cities, in order to increase government’s capacity to develop policy in response to unanticipated economic and social shocks. Our goal is to provide city government with the tools to improve responsiveness to the needs of low-income and minority populations as well as small businesses, who tend to experience the greatest adverse impacts from these shocks.

    In order to ensure the successful implementation of the Communities Speak platform we will be working directly with 3 diverse cities from the Bloomberg Philanthropies network and continue our work in NYC. Our choice of cities will be closely aligned with the purpose of the platform. The survey is designed so that cities can assess the specific needs of vulnerable communities in order to design policies and target resources effectively. 

    The Staff Associate I will work as part of a team in NYC to collect microdata through regular, repeated surveys of individuals, small businesses, and vulnerable groups so that changing conditions can be tracked and policy is informed by the data. The Staff Associate I will also work with the team developing partnerships with various community-based organizations, engaging those partners through digital and in-person events, and ensuring partners have all materials needed in order to participate. The Staff Associate I will work with the team creating training and instructional materials that will be used by a cohort of cities who will adopt Communities Speak; possibly travel to conduct trainings with key staff; and codify all relevant practices, procedures, and lessons learned related to the project.

    Qualifications include a Master’s degree in public affairs or international affairs and minimum of 3 years of related experience.

  • The Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs seeks a Senior Research Scholar or Research Scholar to work on major research topics related to energy and climate change.   • Founding Director of MPA in Global Leadership Program

    Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) brings together an interdisciplinary faculty to conduct research in policy-related fields and train graduate students for careers in global public policy.

    SIPA now invites applications for a full-time appointment as Professor of Professional Practice to launch and run a new graduate degree for senior leaders in global policy and management. The position is expected to begin July 1, 2022, or as soon as possible.

    Candidates must have at least 10 years’ experience in senior positions and be widely recognized for their distinction in a global policy field related to SIPA’s areas of excellence. Candidates also must be willing and able to continue to make significant contributions in their field of practice and knowledge. Preferred candidates will hold a graduate degree (PhD or equivalent preferred) and possess university-level teaching experience or show strong promise to succeed as an instructor in a demanding academic environment. Preferred candidates should also show strong promise to succeed as the founding Director of an important new degree program.

    The Professor of Professional Practice will serve as founding Director of the Master’s in Public Administration in Global Leadership, an intensive 10-month degree designed to prepare senior leaders from around the world to make an even greater impact in their fields. The Director will serve as the academic leader of the program, recruiting instructors and guest lecturers for courses, seminars and workshops and overseeing academic advising of students. The Director will be expected to teach three courses per year in the program (organizing and overseeing the Summer session counts as one course). Working with a full-time Program Manager/Assistant Director and other SIPA professional staff, the Director will oversee student recruitment and admissions, build strategic partnerships, and build and nurture a strong alumni community. The new degree, which has been approved by Columbia University and the New York State Education Department, will enroll its first students in August 2023.

    The Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs seeks a Staff Associate III (Officer of Research) to support original research on domestic and/or international energy policy, geopolitics, technology, equality and justice, markets, development, or other relevant areas (e.g., the energy transition to zero-carbon fuels, energy and public health). The position will leverage linkages between other areas of ongoing work across the Earth Institute, Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy, and Columbia University more broadly, including its Climate School. The position will engage at a high level with key stakeholders. A high level of verbal and written communications, and cultural awareness, skills are required.  

    Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (public policy, economics, international affairs, political science, etc.), at least 4-6 years of professional experience across some combination of the following topics: the power sector, electricity markets, renewable energy, natural gas, energy infrastructure development, energy investment, energy markets, energy policy, energy justice, the energy sector, and/or climate policy, and strong verbal communication skills as well as excellent writing and copy-editing skills.
