Computer Labs

History

The SIPA computer lab was first created in 1985 with a grant from the Aurora project. The expansion of SIPA's computer resources in the Nineties reflected the transition of international affairs and public administration from a qualitative to a quantitative science. In 1995, the lab was named the Picker Computer Center to honor former SIPA dean Harvey Picker, whose generous gift enabled the school to expand and upgrade its computer resources. The lab developed into an instructional facility providing students with the skills needed to compete in the current job market. Students learn the fundamentals of research design, measurement, and data analysis using statistical packages. Computer-based simulations supplement classroom instruction in economics and statistics courses. To meet the school's increasing demands, the computer center is upgraded regularly. The instructional lab is located in 510A IAB, a smaller lab in the Lehman Library (321B), and a 24-hour computers on the 6th floor.

Lab Fees & Access

SIPA labs are open to all SIPA students. Non-SIPA students have limited guest access to attend classes in the Instructional lab. All registered SIPA students are billed automatically a fee each semester during the academic year based on their program. Summer IDs can be purchased by paying the $200 term fee for all programs except PESP, for which the lab fee is $250  per term.. All students must have their CUID validated in the 510 SIPA Lab each term in order to access its network resources.

Non-SIPA students are issued a guest ID to attend a class in the 510A SIPA instructional lab. Guest IDs are issued after information is received from the Office of Student Affairs in the second week of classes. Non-SIPA students who wish to use the SIPA computer lab outside of regular class/recitation time must pay $200 per semester (payable by check or cash in 510 IAB).

Dual degree students should contact the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) to ensure that they are on the list of dual-degree students when not in residence at SIPA. OSA will provide the necessary information for dual degree students to SIPA IT, who will then renew their ID for the Fall or Spring term.

All ID related transactions are conducted in room 510  IAB during business hours, Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Every effort is made to process all IDs within 2 business days. Faculty must request an ID for use in the SIPA computer lab through the department administrator.

All users registered at SIPA will be issued courtesy non-refundable $60 worth of print credit each term. Additional print credit can be purchased in 510 SIPA lab during business hours. They can purchase credit in increments of $1 for 25 pages of black and white laser printing per semester.  The cost is $0.40 per page for color printing. Please plan your purchase as any unused funds are not refundable.
