Ms. Deborah Schein served as Head of Field Office with United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in Bor, Greater Jonglei from March 2016 until December 2020 and as Head of Field Office in Malakal, Upper Nile State from November 2012 until July 2015. Between these two postings, she worked with the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations in New York. In August 2015, the Department of Peacekeeping Operations sent her to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to support the work of the Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan during the final phase of talks on the Agreement for the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan.

Ms. Schein has served on six peacekeeping missions, starting in 1992 in Angola, and afterwards in Mozambique, Timor Leste, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Liberia and Republic of South Sudan. On a temporary assignment, she held the post of Director of the Political Department with the United Nations political mission in Guinea Bissau. In addition, she served with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) as one of the three international members of the Provisional Elections Commission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and later as the Designee of the High Representative on the same commission. Ms. Schein was born in New York City and holds a Master’s Degree in International Affairs from Columbia University, School of international and Public Affairs.
