The United Nations Studies Program and Working Group cordially invite you to our retreat on October 1-2, 2011 at the charming Guest House in Chester, Connecticut. The retreat will be an excellent opportunity to get to know program director Professor Elisabeth Lindenmayer and your colleagues from UNSPWG and find out how to get involved in upcoming activities. The 2011 UNSPWG board of directors will discuss the different board positions available for 2012. All first-year students interested in running for the UNSPWG board for next year are encouraged to come to the meeting! Pizza will be served.

Ambassador Erasmo Lara-Peña former Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the UN will discuss the connection between meditation, inner peace, and world peace.

NOVEMBER

Conflict Assessment in South Sudan: Applying dynamical systems theory to understand local violence - A presentation by SIPA graduates Stephen Gray and Josephine Roos 

   
On the eve of Southern independence, Josefine Roos and Stephen Gray traveled to South Sudan to study tribal violence using dynamical systems theory, an understanding of conflict pioneered by Peter Coleman and others at  Columbia University and beyond. This was the first time a conflict of this type had been assessed first person using this methodology. The presentation will discuss the methodology, the findings, and means by which local peacebuilding  interventions in the new nation might be better targeted.

UNSPWG Elections for the 2012 Board of Directors

UNSPWG announces the 2012 Board election process.  There are seven positions up for election on the board.  Candidates may choose to run for more than one position and if doing so should include in their statements their reasoning for doing so and qualifications related to each.  The term of office is for one year and will run from January 2012 through December 2012.

The elections timeline is as follows:
Sunday, November 13 - Candidate statements due
Tuesday, November 15 at 8 pm - Candidates make short speech to UNSPWG membership
Wed/Thurs, November 16, 17 - UNSPWG membership votes on candidates
Friday, November 18 - Election results announced
Friday, November 18 through Friday, December 23 - Outgoing and incoming board handover process

To express your interest, your first step is to submit a candidate statement by Sunday, November 13th.  Statements should be emailed to Christine Heckman (ceh2161@columbia.edu) and Tyler Radford (tr2322@columbia.edu). They should include your reasons for running for the particular position(s), why the position(s) is/are relevant/a good match for your skills and experience, and any other thoughts you may want to share.  Statements should be 1-2 paragraphs in length.  Candidate statements will be circulated to the UNSPWG membership and available on the UNSPWG website prior to voting.

UN Young Professionals Brown Bag Series: UN Women

The brown bag lunch will feature Sarah Douglas, expert on gender and security sector reform at UN Women. Sarah will discuss her 9 years of experience in the UN system, including being one of the very first staff members in the UN's newest entity, UN Women.
