The International Criminal Court (ICC): Recent Developments

The purpose of these lunches is to give SIPA students access to the current thinking of the UN's diplomatic community on specific issues, while at the same time providing UN Ambassadors the opportunity to hear students' views and perspectives on topic of mutual concern and interest. It is meant to continue strengthening the relationship between the United Nations and SIPA and create an ongoing dialogue between the world of international politics and academia 

10 Years of Women, Peace and Security

In order to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) and in advance of the Security Council Ministerial Meeting the following day 

Speakers:

  • Atul Khare, Assistant Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations, who went to investigate the recent mass rapes in Eastern Congo, will address the issue of protection. 
  • Judy Cheng-Hopkins, Assistant Secretary General for Peace Building Support to the Peace Building Commission, and SIPA Alumna. 
  • Barbara Crossette, former NYT Foreign Correspondent and journalist. She recently traveled to 7 countries (Liberia, Uganda, Bosnia, Timor-Leste, the Palestinian West Bank, Jordan (to meet with Iraqi) and Haiti) to interview women and prepare a field survey on how things look "out there" 10 years after 1325. She will talk about what she heard, saw and wrote. 
  • Betty Achan Ogwaro, Chairperson of Sudanese Women Forum of Darfur /Southern Sudan affiliated with Femmes Africa Solidarity. She is the first and only woman participating in a peace process with the LRA. 
  • Yuergen Heissel, from the Austrian Mission. He will give the perspectives of the Security Council.

The 10th anniversary of resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. 

The Director of the United Nations Studies Program, Professor Elysabeth Lindenmayer, will bring students to debates at the UN Security Council.

The Foreign Minister of Uganda will preside. The newly appointed head of UN women, Michelle Bachelet (former President of Chile) will brief the Council. Hillary Clinton is expected to attend as well as many other Foreign Ministers.

UNSP: Visit to the Security Council

The Director of the United Nations Studies Program, Professor Elysabeth Lindenmayer, will take students to: A Major Debate on Sudan under the UK Presidency 

The meeting will be at the Ministerial level and will be chaired by Foreign Secretary Hague. Other Foreign Ministers have indicated that they will attend. Special Representative of the Secretary General, Menkerios and Joint Special Representative Gambari  (SIPA alumnus!) will most likely brief by VTC. 

A Day at the UN: A View From Inside

The Director of the United Nations Studies Program, Professor Elysabeth Lindenmayer, will take students to the debate on:  "The Protection of Civilians" at the UN Security Council.

Briefers Include:

  • USG Amos, OCHA
  • USG Le Roy, Peacekeeping
  • Ms. Navi Pillay, High Commissioner for Human Rights
  • Mr. Yves Daccord, Director General of the ICRC

There are already 20 requests to speak under rule 37 and 39 of the Council, and more are expected.

Students must be at the UN by 9:15am to go through security in order to meet the group and Professor Lindenmayer at the visitor's desk by 9:30am at the latest. No late arrivals will be permitted to enter the meeting. In addition:

  • Professional attire is required (no blue jeans)
  • Students who arrive late must not try to enter the meeting -- the group must enter together with Professor Lindenmayer.
  • No chewing gum
  • Please refrain from talking while in the meeting
  • Those students who are unable to stay for the entire meeting may leave quietly during the session if necessary
 

UNSPWG: DevInfo  Training

The UN Studies Program Working Group & The New Media Task Force present:

Christina J. Irene, a representative from the joint UNICEF/DevInfo programme, along with the Fall 2010 DevInfo Interns, will present an introduction to the DevInfo data management system. DevInfo is used by institutions such as the United Nations, World Economic Forum, African Development Bank (AfDB), and National Statistics Offices  (NSOs) in over 130 countries.  This session will be interactive and hands-on, so please bring your laptops.

DevInfo is a database system endorsed by the UN for monitoring human development. It is a tool for organizing, storing and presenting data in a uniform way to facilitate data sharing at the country level across government departments, UN agencies and development partners.

Christina J. Irene is the Technical Advisor of the DevInfo Support Group (DSG), a joint programme of the United Nations  (www.devinfo.org).  Before joining DSG, Ms. Irene worked in the monitoring and evaluation division at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Prior to that she was a consultant in the program development department at the Clinton Foundation, and has spent time working abroad in places such as Argentina after graduate school, and in the Dominican Republic during Peace Corps.  Ms. Irene holds a Masters in International Affairs and Socioeconomic Development and a BA in International Studies.

DECEMBER

UNSPWG: U.N. Women and Gender Task Force 1st Meeting

The UN Women and Gender Task Force wants address and observe several issues pertaining to Women and Gender within the UN system, both internally and programmatically. Specifically how the UN is addressing women’s issue throughout the world and women’s issues and employment within the UN system itself. 

Some projects they have in mind for the coming semesters: 

  • Lunch with women working within the UN (all level employees) 
  • Panel with High Level women working in the UN 
  • Event on Women Peacekeepers (we will start working on this one right away) 

A large focus will be to work with faculty to develop gender focused workshops that can be pitched to the UN and its partner agencies.  We will begin generating ideas on this as soon as possible.

The 2010 United Nations Climate Change Conference will be held in Cancun,
Mexico, from November 29 to December 10, 2010. This summit, referred to as
16th Conference of the Parties (COP16), is part of a series of international
talks attempting to address global warming by limiting greenhouse gas emissions. The objective of this summit is to work on a global agreement to
succeed the Kyoto protocol after the talks at Copenhagen last year failed to
replace it (the Kyoto Protocol came into force in 2005 and set binding
targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European community for
reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2012). Professor Laurence Tubiana and
Professor Scott Barrett will discuss expectations and outcomes of COP16.
  
Professor Scott Barrett is the Lenfest-Earth Institute Professor of Natural
Resource Economics at the School of International and Public Affairs
(SIPA)and the Earth Institute. He was previously a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
  
Professor Laurence Tubiana is the founder and director of the Institute for
Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) and a Professor
at Sciences Po, Paris. This semester, she is the Alliance Visiting Professor
at Columbia University. Professor Tubiana follows and participates in the
international negotiations on climate change, in which IDDRI is highly
involved.
  
The Alliance Program is a partnership between Columbia University and
three French universities, the Ecole Polytechnique, Sciences Po and the
