Screening of Dunno Y ... Na Jaane Kyun
When: SOON

Join GLIPA for a screening of Dunno Y ... Na Jaane Kyun, a controversial Bollywood film about a struggling model who goes to Mumbai (the center of Bollywood) in order to have a bright career and achieve fame. The film is hailed by some as "India's answer to Brokeback Mountain" for its sensitive portrayal of a gay relationship. GLIPA is sponsoring this screening as part of its effort to bring to SIPA an understanding of the issues surrounding sexuality, LGBT people, and cultural acceptance in other countries. GLIPA Pre-Thanksgiving Party
When: November 18th from 9:30 PM
Where: Madame X (94 W. Houston St., near the 1/2/4/5/A/B/C/D/E/F/M/N/R)
Please join GLIPA for its annual pre-Thanksgiving Party at the Madame X Bar and Lounge on Thursday, November 18! We had over 125 people turn out last year, and are hoping 2010 will be even better.

OPEN BAR will be begin at 9:30 PM sharp! We have also reserved the entire 2nd floor of Madame X for the party. Be there or effectively be square!

*Tickets: $15 before the party or $20 at the door. Tickets will be sold November 9th through the 18th on the 4th floor of SIPA.

*All SIPA and Columbia students, friends, and/or significant others are welcome and encouraged to attend!

Conference on LGBTQ Rights & International Public Health

Please join GLIPA for a conference & panel discussion on LGBTQ rights and international public health. Details to follow. Event organized by the Mailman School of Public Health's Queer Health Task force.


GLIPA Group Meeting

Join GLIPA for a regular group meeting. At the meeting we'll discuss upcoming events and more! Food and drinks will be served.

Screening of The Wedding Banquet
When: October 27th at 6:30 PM
Where: Weatherhead Institute, 9th Floor, SIPA Building
Join GLIPA for a screening of The Wedding Banquet, a comedy about a gay Chinese-American couple trying to hide their relationship through a marriage of convenience. GLIPA is sponsoring this screening as part of its effort to bring to SIPA an understanding of the issues surrounding sexuality, LGBT people, and cultural acceptance in other countries. You can read more about the film here. This event is being cosponsored by the Asia Pacific Affairs Council (APAC).

GLIPA Potluck and Historic Stonewall Tour

Where: At a GLIPA member's house on the 2/3 at 141st
Join GLIPA for a group potluck and then a visit to the historic Stonewall Inn! Email glipa@columbia.edu for details.

Fundraiser and Collection for New Alternatives, a Homeless LGBT Youth Support Organization
When: October 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th from 10 AM to 4 PM
Where: 4th Floor Lobby, International Affairs Building
Join GLIPA in supporting New Alternatives, an organization that assists homeless LGBT youth by providing case management, community organizing, life skills groups, community-building recreational activities, and, in the long-term, supported employment opportunities.

GLIPA members will be accepting cash donations, clean and wearable clothing items (coats, scarves, gloves, socks etc.), and new and unused toiletries (travel size deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, hand sanitizer, personal hygiene/safety kits etc.) for New Alternatives. This list is not exhaustive so please give what you can!

First Meeting of the Semester
When: September 15th at 8:15 PM

Join GLIPA for its first meeting of the new year. We're planning on going over our achievements from last year, pending business, and finances. Most importantly, we'll discuss prospective projects, events, and happenings and look forward to hearing from both first- and second-year students.

Panel on Sexuality in the Arab World
When: April 19 at 5:30 PM
Where: Room 555, Lerner Hall
GLIPA is proud to cosponsor (along with CQA, CIRCA, and Proud Colors) a panel on sexuality in the Arab world. Helem (http://www.helem.net), a Lebanese NGO that is the first and one of the most prominent LGBTQ organizations in the Arab World, will present an overview and personal accounts on the status of LGBTQ individuals in the Arab World, the legal aspects of their organizational work and LGBTQ rights, and the activism they do in Lebanon and elsewhere in the Arab world. Michael Luongo, editor of "Gay Travels in the Muslim World," will also participate on the panel.

Career Panel
When: Thursday, April 8 from 6 to 9 PM
Where: International Affairs Building, Room 1501
Join GLIPA for a career panel that will highlight the career paths of LGBT professionals in international and public affairs. This event will include panelists representing the various occupational sectors many students will enter upon graduation. Refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be served before the event. Afterwards, GLIPA will hold an off-campus mixer where students will be able to continue the conversation with panelists. All are welcome!

Bowling with GLIPA
When: Tuesday, March 30 at 7:30 PM
Where: 300 New York (Chelsea Piers) - Between piers 59 and 60 @ 23rd St.
Join GLIPA for bowling at Chelsea Piers. Games are $10/each, and shoe rental is $6. Afterwards, we'll head out into Chelsea and find a place to continue the merriment!

GLIPA Thanksgiving Party
When: Thursday, November 19 at 10 PM
Where: Madame X
GLIPA (formerly QUIPASA) welcomes everyone to come start the Thanksgiving holiday season off right on Thursday, November 19 at Madame X Bar. Come give thanks downtown with friends before the holiday break! The bar is open for about the first hour! Ticket will be sold on Thursday, November 19, in the afternoon, on the 4th Floor. $10 in advance, or $15 at the door.

The Repeal of Section 377: Decriminalization and the political, legal and public health implications for the GLBT community in India
When: November 5, 6 PM
Where: Knox Hall, Room 207, 606 West 122nd Street (Between Broadway & Claremont Avenue)
A panel discussion with Myna Mukherjee, Vivek Divan, Dr. Viraj Patel and Prashant Iyengar on the recent ruling on Indian Penal Code 377 that decriminalized sodomy. Moderated by Aseem Chhabra. Supported by a grant from the Kraft Family Foundation.

Co-sponsored by Gays and Lesbians in International and Public Affairs (GLIPA) at Columbia University and the South Asia Institute.


GLIPA Mixer with Cluster Q from the Columbia Business School
When: Wednesday, November 4, 8 PM - Midnight
Where: Suite, 992 Amsterdam Ave, New York, 10025
Come meet the LGBT students from the business school's LGBT organization Cluster Q at Suite (http://www.suitenyc.com). This will be an informal gathering in advance of a bigger event likely to take place early next semester. We'll also be inviting the OutLaws (the LGBT group at the law school). See you there!
