Disability Services at Columbia University Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I receive services if I have a disability?
A. You must first register with the Columbia University Office of Disability Services (ODS) in Lerner Hall, suite 802. Complete information is located on their website http://www.health.columbia.edu/ods/news/ds-register.html
Q. Does Columbia provide testing and diagnostic service for learning disabilities?
A. No, but the ODS will provide a list of referrals some which offer sliding scale for their fees.
Q. What if I don't want to disclose my disability?
A. It is your decision whether or not to disclose and register with the Office of Disability Services. If you choose not to, please be aware that we are not obligated to provide any accommodations.
Q. If I choose not to disclose, how will this effect me?
A. If it would be appropriate to receive accommodations and you choose not to disclose them, you may be hindering your ability to achieve in class. The purpose of accommodations is to provide you with what you need to perform and meet expectations.
Q. Do faculty have access to the file that contains my diagnosis?
A. Any documentation on your disability is not in your student file. The only people who have access to confidential documents are the Director and the Staff of the Office of Disability Services.
Q. How much information is a faculty member given about my disability?
A. The notice that is provided for your professor only indicates that you are registered with the Office of Disability Services and the specific accommodations you will need. No specific information on your disability is given.
Q. What if I need access to buildings?
A. Disability Services has a map and booklet detailing the access points throughout the campus. If you happen to have a class that that is in an inaccessible building, please notify Disability Services so the situation can be remedied immediately.
Q. What do I do if I feel I am being discriminated against because of my disability?
A. If you feel that anyone at the University is treating you unfairly because of your disability you should go to your Disability Services Liaison immediately.
