SIPA Dean John Coatsworth Named Provost of Columbia University
Professor Robert Lieberman to Serve as Interim Dean

Dean John H. Coatsworth, SIPA's dean for the past four years, has been appointed provost of Columbia University, effective immediately. Coatsworth has been serving as interim provost since this past summer.

Robert Lieberman, SIPA vice dean and professor of political science and public affairs, has been appointed to serve as interim dean of SIPA.

Alumni Day 2012 to Feature First-Ever Alumni Reunions

SIPA's annual Alumni Day, on April 28th, will feature a new set of events, as the school's first-ever official reunions will take place that evening.

The reunions will focus on those who graduated from SIPA five and ten years ago, with the fifth-year reunion focusing on the classes of 2006 and 2007, while the tenth-year reunion is intended for the SIPA classes of 2001 and 2002.

SIPA Alumni Mentoring Program Generates Strong Response

The SIPA Alumni Mentoring Program, developed by the SIPA Alumni Council, has received a strong response from both alumni and current students as the program expands. More than 100 alumni have volunteered to be mentors to younger alumni and students, helping them guide their careers. Mentees are currently being matched with mentors who best fit their professional needs, with a kick-off event planned for March 1st at the Columbia Club in Manhattan.

Arvind Panagariya Receives High Honor from Indian Government

Professor Arvind Panagariya, SIPA's Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy, has been awarded the Padma Bhushan by the government of India. This is India's third highest civilian award and was established in 1954 to recognize distinguished service of high order in any field.

Kempe Shortlisted for Lionel Gelber Prize

Frederick Kempe, IF '77 JRN '77 is among five authors shortlisted for this year's Lionel Gelber Prize, for his book, Berlin 1961: Kennedy, Krushchev, and the Most Dangerous Place on Earth. The award is given to the world's best non-fiction book in English in foreign affairs "that seeks to deepen public debate on significant international issues." Kempe is currently president and chief executive officer of the Atlantic Council.

Alumni Database Soon to Be Open to Students

As noted in last month's newsletter, SIPA students will be given access to the alumni database, so that they can take advantage of the networking power of the alumni body. The Office of Alumni Affairs will set up guidlines for students to follow, so that the access is directed toward career networking. Alumni can adjust their contact settings to hear from students as much or as little as they like. Details about this program will be sent to alumni soon.

SIPA Prof Appointed to National Park Service Panel

Professor Rodolfo de la Garza has been appointed to the American Latino Scholars Expert Panel of the National Park System Advisory Board. The panel will advise the National Park System on a study that will investigate the stories, places, and people of Latino heritage that are worthy of preservation and interpretation.

Pirojsha Godrej (MIA '04, MBA '08) has been named managing director and chief executive officer of Godrej Properties, effective April 1. He joined the company in 2004 and successfully spearheaded the IPO for the company in 2009.
